Luke 22:26-27 - “26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.”
Jesus changes everything. Often, when He changes something, He flips it completely on its head! … and He most definitely did this with the concept of LEADERSHIP.
YOU are a Leader … don’t stop reading because you don’t have people at work reporting to you or have never taught a class … You. Are. A. Leader. … so this applies to you!
How did/does Jesus flip our idea of Leadership completely on its head? … by teaching & modeling for us His concept of SERVANT LEADERSHIP.
The SERVANT Part
This Teaching from Jesus takes place as He had actively served His Disciples by washing their feet.
While they argued over who will be the greatest … Jesus (Who is the Greatest!) literally took on the role & responsibility of a servant by washing their nasty feet.
The world’s understanding produces leaders being served … Jesus’ teaches us to lead BY serving.
Do you look for ways to SERVE the people that you encounter each and every day? … we are comfortable with the idea of service projects, where we go somewhere to serve people we don’t know in a specific way … but are we SERVING the people we do know? … the people in our lives day in & day out?
The LEADERSHIP Part
Jesus didn’t just do whatever anybody else wanted … He very much was LEADING those around Him.
Even in the act of washing His Disciples feet, He TAUGHT them! … don’t mistake our call to SERVE & LOVE others as a “anything anyone else wants goes” mandate.
Our acts of Service should draw those we serve to God … that He would teach them, disciple them, grow them & CHANGE them.
Our service should LEAD those we serve to a deeper relationship WITH GOD.
The Israelites expected Jesus to show up as a Messiah based on their own understanding of Leadership … He showed up as a Servant Leader and completely changed the world!
Are you expecting Jesus to call you into a role based on your own understanding of how this life works? … or His?
Some of us struggle with the Servant part. Some of us struggle with the Leadership part.
Whichever your struggle, FOLLOW HIM and He will lead you to & power you through your personally prepared day of servant leadership before you.
